The Civil Rights Movement lasted from 1955-1968. The Civil Rights Movement was aimed to outlaw racial discrimination between the colored folks and the whote folks. Many of those who were active in pursuing the Civil Rights Movement, with organizations such as NACCP, SNCC, CORE and SLCL, prefer the term "Southern Freedom Movement" because the struggle was about far more than just civil rights under law; it was also about fundamental issues of freedom, respect, dignity, and economic and social equality. The African-American people expressed their opinion by doing peaceful protests. They would march up and down street shouting out but they never caused any violence. Some of these marches were led by Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife. Another example of the peacful protest was the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In this boycott the African-Americans refused to ride on the buses driving many of the businesses bankcrupt because they didn't have enough white people riding their buses to keep thier business running. One of the first acts to be passed by congress to progress the Civil Rights was allowing the African-American to vote. After that it just became easier for the president to waver the congress into finally passing the Civil Right Act in 1968.
